Digital Camera Review - Panasonic LUMIX DMC-FX500

Panasonic has announced a new 10-megapixel digital camera - the LUMIX DMC-FX500. It features a 3.0 inch touchscreen and can record video in High-Fefinition (HD) format at 720p as well as take still images in a 16:9 aspect ratio that can be viewed on a widescreen monitor or television. Other features include 5X optical zoom, image-stabilization technology, face detection, and a 25mm wide-angle lens. The camera is to be released in May 2008 with a price of about $400.

According to the Panasonic website, "the FX500 packs innovative features and intuitive design, helping consumers enrich the digital photography experience and take better photos." The FX500 is the latest model in the highly popular FX-series of LUMIX digital cameras that feature slim and stylish design and packing in the latest developments and technical capabilities.

The FX500 has "a hybrid control system that combines joystick control with touch-screen operation", allowing users to make fine adjustments by touch, using either their finger or the LUMIX stylus-pen that comes with the FX500.

The FX500 digital camera is also significant in that it expands Panasonic's line of ultra-wide-angle lens with a 25mm wide-angle lens that allow for almost twice the photo area of a conventional 35mm lens at the same shooting distance. Also helpful for photographing active children or animals, the FX500 features Auto Focus (AF) tracking technology that tracks the photo subjects that move after the AF is set.

Other technologies featured in the LUMIX DMC-FX500 are Intelligent Exposure, Digital Red-eye Correction, MEGA O.I.S. that compensates for shaky hands, Intelligent Scene Selector.
